Was Jesus a Muslim? Understanding the Truth About His Identity

A Search for Truth

David sat in his car outside a bookstore, watching the rain slide down the windshield. His phone buzzed with a message from a friend who had sent him a video claiming that Jesus was a Muslim—a prophet like Muhammad and not the Son of God.

David had grown up in church hearing that Jesus was the Son of God, but this video made him pause. Could he have misunderstood Jesus all these years? Had he been following the wrong teachings? He felt a mix of confusion and curiosity.

instead of reacting emotionally, David decided to search for answers. (1)

Instead of reacting emotionally, David decided to search for answers. He walked into the bookstore and picked up a Bible, flipping through the pages of the Gospels. As he read, he saw the truth with fresh eyes. Jesus was not a Muslim. He was not just a prophet or a teacher. He was and is the Son of God.

Jesus in the Bible: The Son of God

The Bible is clear in its teachings about Jesus. His identity is more than that of a prophet. His mission and teachings confirm His divine nature.

  1. Jesus Claimed to Be One with God
    • “I and the Father are one.” — John 10:30
    • “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” — John 14:9
Jesus did not just claim to be a teacher or prophet; He claimed to be one with God. No other prophet in history made such a claim because only the Son of God has that authority.
  2. Jesus Had Authority to Forgive Sins
    • “But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, He said to the paralyzed man, ‘Get up, take your mat and go home.'” — Matthew 9:6
Only God can forgive sins, yet Jesus exercised this authority. If He were only a prophet, He would not have the power to forgive sins but would have pointed people to someone else for forgiveness.
  3. Jesus Was Worshiped as Lord
    • “Then those who were in the boat worshiped him saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.'” — Matthew 14:33
No faithful prophet of God in the Bible ever accepted worship, but Jesus did because He is more than a prophet. He is divine.
  4. Jesus Was Crucified and Rose from the Dead
    • “He is not here; he has risen just as he said.” — Matthew 28:6
The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus are foundational to Christianity. Islam denies that Jesus was crucified, which makes its portrayal of Jesus completely different from the Bible. The resurrection is proof of His divinity and victory over sin and death.

Jesus in the Quran

While the Quran acknowledges Jesus as a prophet, it does not recognize Him as the Son of God. However, even within Islamic scripture, Jesus has unique characteristics that no other prophet possesses.

  1. Jesus Was Born of a Virgin
    • “She said, ‘My Lord, how can I have a child when no man has touched me?'” — Quran 3:47
Unlike any other prophet, Jesus was born of a virgin. This miraculous birth is a sign of His divine nature.
  2. Jesus Performed Unique Miracles
    • “I heal the blind and the leper and I give life to the dead by Allah’s permission.” — Quran 3:49
No other Islamic prophet was given the power to raise the dead. The Bible reveals that Jesus had divine authority, not just borrowed power.
  3. Jesus Will Return to Judge the World
    • Islamic teachings say that Jesus will return at the end of time. This raises a question: If Jesus were merely a prophet, why would He return in such a central role? The Bible teaches that Jesus will return to establish His kingdom forever.
    • “Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all peoples on earth will mourn because of him.” — Revelation 1:7

Was Jesus a Muslim?

Islam began centuries after Jesus walked the earth. Jesus did not follow the Five Pillars of Islam, nor did He teach Muhammad’s revelations. Instead, Jesus preached about the kingdom of God, called Himself the Son of God, and fulfilled prophecies about the Messiah.

Christianity is based on the identity of Jesus as the Son of God, not merely as a prophet. His death and resurrection are at the core of salvation. Jesus was not a follower of Islam but the Savior of the world.

Jesus Offers Eternal Life

  • “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?'” — John 11:25-26

Conclusion: Who is Jesus?

Jesus was not a Muslim. He was not just a prophet. He is the Son of God, the Messiah, and the only way to salvation.
The Bible testifies to His divine nature, His power to forgive sins, and His resurrection. If we want to understand who Jesus truly is, we must look at His words and the testimony of scripture, not a rewritten version of His life.

The Ultimate Invitation

  • “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16
  • “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.” — 1 Timothy 2:5
Jesus does not just invite us to see Him as a prophet; He invites us to know Him as Lord and Savior.
